Forest school approach
Forest school is a long term process of frequent visits and regular sessions in woodland or natural environments to facilitate holistic development of its participants.
“An inspirational process that offers children, young people and adults regular opportunities to achieve, develop confidence and self esteem through hands on learning experiences in a local woodland environment”
UK definition of Forest School from the first national conference of practitioners
Our Academy focuses on three things

- Holistic development of the participants
The Academy offers the design and implementation of forest school activities and sites for schools and community groups. We offer short and long term bespoke packages for children, young people and adults. To enquire please contact us.
Traditional methods of woodland management are very much based in a low impact and sustainable ethos. Historically woodland workers survived on their careful and sensitive management of their resources and the perseveration of those resources for future years and generations.
The cyclical nature of the woodland season and the lengthy duration of the rotation of tree cutting meant that woodland workers were in tune with the seasons and the seasonal changes over periods of years.
The observation of these changes and the active cultivation of habitats and environments that allow specific re-growth and species to flourish encourages a relationship with nature that is beyond that of a voyeur, but is focussed on the nurturing of the natural occurrences within the environment.
Green Canopy Academy see this as the core of what we do and in our forest school packages and woodland learning experiences this role as a woodland steward is essential.
We offer learning experiences in; Forest school activities, hedge laying, coppice management, woodland structures, habitat creation, woodland tool use and woodland craft.
To see up and coming experiences, and learning opportunities please see our calendar.
