‘When Summer lies upon the world, and in a noon of gold, Beneath the roof of sleeping leaves the dreams of trees unfold; When woodland halls are green and cool, and wind is in the West, Come back to me! Come back to me, and say my land is best!’
In 2009 Green Canopy Company founders Janet and Ben bought a 5 acre site in North Devon, known as ‘Woodland at Stoodleigh’. The site consists of two plots joined by a grazing field, and is post war natural regeneration on an ancient woodland site. This means there is a lot of history to our woods! In the spring the early purple orchids, wood anemone and bluebells give us a blaze of colour before the canopy closes over and reminds us of its history. There is an ancient hedge row with gnarled and deformed trees and stools that are like a ghost of the ancient and wild woods that once covered this country.
The woods are abundant with life and home to a diverse array of creatures and wildlife: this is exactly as we want to keep it. Green Canopy Woods are managed for biodiversity and conservation. We practice traditional woodland management techniques that are sustainable and designed to encourage and enhance the woodland's ecosystem.
The woods are a place where we go to rejuvenate and remind ourselves of why we are doing what we do. Although we ‘own’ the woodland we understand that all we are really doing is holding it in stewardship for future generations.
We offer unique experiences in these woods that are about connecting with yourself and the natural environment through the act of managing a woodland, this includes hedge laying, coppicing, coppice craft and forest school activities.
